Normative Disparity

How does one justify a design dictum? Is it a metaphysical or a prescriptive principle and/or principle of aesthetics? Is it some other kind of irreducible architectural principle? Is the dictum’s justification meant to be logical, rational and/or affective, or in some way grounded in experience or phenomenology?
